The Claymore Shop was founded in 1966 by fashion visionary Bob Benkert, a gentleman who began his career in the clothing business after a stint in public accounting proved to be a little too black and white for Mr. Benkert’s colorful personality. Bob was a constant presence in his store up until his death in April of 2016.
Through the years, Bob’s landmark haberdashery has become part of the heart of Birmingham, dressing celebrities, titans of business and those who valued Bob’s keen eye for style that can best be described as classic with flair.
His hard work and unyielding dedication to the city of Birmingham was rewarded when Bob was named the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber’s 2015 Business Person of the Year.
Being in business for half a century has made his store an icon in the Oakland County area and beyond. In that time, the Claymore Shop has become a symbol of luxury and custom tailoring.
With such prestigious brands as Oxxford, Samuelsohn, Ralph Lauren, and many more – Bob’s clients’ separated themselves from the relentless trends that come and go by working with Bob and his team to create a style that was uniquely their own.
Over the years, Bob generously donated hundreds of items and gift cards from the Claymore Shop to support local charity fundraisers. Further, Bob and his wife J.J. also gave their personal time and talent to several organizations including The Michigan Humane Society, The Beaumont Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund, South Oakland Shelter, and Cranbrook’s Horizons Upward Bound program.
